Lower values keep more dark pixels. Higher values make more mid-tones white.
Grayscale preserves gray shades. Black & White uses a threshold for a strict two-tone result. Higher DPI and PNG can increase output size.

Convert PDF to Grayscale or Black & White Online
Turn a color PDF into a grayscale PDF or a strict black-and-white PDF without installing desktop software. OneStepKit processes the document in your browser and lets you control the conversion mode, rendering resolution, image format, JPEG quality, and B&W threshold.
Grayscale PDF vs. Black & White PDF
Grayscale keeps many shades between black and white, which helps photos, gradients, charts, and scanned pages retain tonal detail. Black & White uses only two values and can be useful for text-heavy scans, forms, and strict monochrome printing. Current PDF conversion tools commonly expose this distinction. citeturn975263search5turn975263search6
Choose the right PDF DPI
72 DPI targets smaller output and faster processing, 150 DPI is a balanced setting for ordinary documents, and 300 DPI is aimed at sharper print output. Higher resolution creates more pixels per page and can increase processing time and output size.
JPEG or PNG?
JPEG is useful when smaller raster pages are more important, especially for photo-heavy PDFs. PNG is lossless and can be preferable for screenshots, line art, and pages where compression artefacts are distracting. The trade-off is often a larger output file.
The text-searchability trade-off
This browser implementation renders every page and rebuilds the PDF as images so it can consistently convert text, images, charts, gradients, and other page graphics to grayscale. That means the converted file does not retain the original selectable text layer. Some current browser-based grayscale tools document the same image-based trade-off. citeturn859141search1turn859141search4
Why convert a PDF to grayscale?
Common uses include black-and-white printing, reducing dependence on color output, preparing documents for submission, and creating a more uniform appearance. Adobe's current 2026 guidance specifically discusses black-and-white conversion for printing, sharing, storage, and submissions. citeturn975263search0
Scanned PDFs and B&W threshold
Scans can contain gray paper, shadows, faint text, and photographs. Grayscale is useful when those tonal details matter; Black & White lets you tune a threshold when you want a strict two-tone result. Current PDF converters also expose threshold-based black-and-white processing for this purpose. citeturn975263search12turn975263search5
