Guide: Measuring Long Boards
Welcome to the Carpenter's Digital Companion!
Measuring long pieces of wood (longer than your screen) is simple when you use the right technique. This 1-minute guide will show you how to measure anything using your phone.
The Stepper Tape (Pivoting)
Great for quick estimations without marking the wood.
- Align your phone flat at the starting edge of the wood.
- Tap "TAP TO STEP" on the screen.
- Pivot (roll) the phone end-to-end like a folding ruler.
- Tap the button at each pivot to add the phone's height automatically.
Edge Ruler (Sliding & Drag-Aligning)
Perfect when you need absolute precision down to 1/16".
- Place the phone edge flat against the wood.
- Make a pencil mark on the wood at the 5" line. Tap "Drop Mark".
- Slide the phone along the edge past the mark.
- Drag the ruler scale on the screen to align the virtual mark with your pencil mark.
Calibrate Your Screen First!
Every phone has a different screen size. To make sure 1 inch on screen is exactly 1 inch in the real world:
- Hold a physical credit card or ID card against the screen.
- Go to the Calibration tab and adjust the slider to match the card size.
